Hundreds of Egyptians living abroad, protested in front of Egyptian embassies on Saturday October 8, demanding for their right to vote during the upcoming elections in Egypt. They gathered through campaigns on Facebook and Twitter. Egyptian businessman living in the U.S.A, Ahmed Ibrahim said, “The campaign is global. It includes Egyptians in New York, Washington, Huston and Los Angeles.” Egyptians protested in front of all Egyptian embassies in Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Australia, Canada and Hong Kong. Gulf countries prevented Egyptians from holding protests in their countries and to hold electronic campaigns instead. “The Egyptian cabinet promised in April to issue a decision to enable Egyptians abroad to vote and elect. But no action has been taken,” Ibrahim said. Egyptians abroad demanded for their right to vote whether by sending their Egyptian ID number or with their passports. Egyptians abroad wonder how they cannot vote from outside Egypt while other countries such as Algeria, Sudan and India allow their people abroad to a right to vote outside. The electronic campaign includes Egyptian abroad slogans and promoting videos. “We are Egyptian. We did not lose our identity or our nationalism. It is our right to participate in making a decision. We represent ten percent of the Egyptian society,” Ibrahim said.
