CAIRO: Egyptian activists are organizing a digital protest to grant Egyptians abroad the right to vote this Saturday. Activists said a number of protests will take place at the same time outside of Egyptian embassies in various countries to pressure the Egyptian government to grant them the right to vote. The online protest will also target the Facebook and Twitter accounts of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), Prime Minister Essam Sharaf and other top political figures. If allowed to vote, Egyptians living abroad could be a force in changing the face of an election as their numbers near some 8 million people. The activists complained that the SCAF has shown no willingness to allow Egyptian ex-pats to vote and accused them of ignoring the plea of millions of citizens. Activists said that the money sent from abroad is considered the “second top revenue of the Egyptian economy, after tourism, and that in itself should be a reason to acknowledge them.” Egyptians abroad have been campaigning for months, but their pleas have yet to catch the attention of the SCAF or the Egyptian Cabinet.
