At a liberal opposition Wafd Party meeting on Monday, executive board member Mohamed Kamel called for holding President Hosni Mubarak responsible for reported fraud in recently concluded parliamentary elections. However, Ali al-Selmy, president of the party's shadow government, and Fouad Badrawy, the party's vice president, disagreed with Kamel. In the end, they cast Kamel's suggestion to a vote. The majority voted in favor. The suggestion also called for challenging the legitimacy of parliament in court, continuing endeavors for a comprehensive political reform, and mobilizing all opposition forces to unite against the existing regime, which Kamel says has tarnished the country's reputation. Kamel also called for educating citizens of their constitutional rights, irrespective of their religious and political orientations. The meeting's participants agreed that reported election rigging violates the Constitution. They accused the High Elections Commission of failing to execute court rulings invalidating votes in 92 polling stations and thereby preventing the parliament from achieving the necessary quorum for its formation.
