Borussia Dortmund can now eye a Champions League place after claiming a 2-1 home victory over Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga on Saturday. The primary target for Dortmund was to earn a place in the Europa League, Europe's secondary club competition, but an impressive run of results saw their ambition grew. Attacking midfielder Kevin Grosskreutz gave them the lead over Bremen after nine minutes with a superb far-post header. Neven Subotic doubled their advantage on 22 minutes with the help of Egypt striker and former Bremen man Mohamed Zidan, who has scored six league goals so far this season. The Serbian defender rose to head home an inch-perfect corner from Zidan, who was substituted seven minutes past the hour mark. Bremen striker Aaron Hunt halved the deficit in the 65th minute with a clinical finish from inside the area. However, fourth-placed Dortmund clung on to secure a precious win and move to within one point of third-placed Bayer Leverkusen, who suffered a 3-2 defeat by Eintracht Frankfurt. A third-place finish would enable Jurgen Klopp's side to play in the Champions League for the first time since 2004. Dortmund won the elite competition once in 1997 when they beat Italian giants Juventus in the final.
