Mohamed Zidan's Dortmund missed out on a place in the Europa League, the UEFA Cup new version, after being held to a 1-1 draw by Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday. Hamburg leapfrogged Dortmund into fifth place after defeating Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 to earn the last automatic spot in Europe's secondary competition. Dortmund, who finished sixth in the table on 59 points, could still qualify for the Europa League via the Intertoto Cup. Monchengladbach took the lead through Brazilian defender Dante, who headed in from close range in the 57th minute. Dortmund's Polish winger Jakub Błaszczykowski 'Kuba' restored parity four minutes past the hour mark. Egyptian forward Zidan started on the bench before being introduced in the 70th minute instead of Kuba. The 27-year-old finished as Dortmund's second top scorer with seven goals, four behind Swiss striker Alexander Frei. Zidan, who joined Dortmund from Hamburg last summer, was used mainly as a substitute throughout the season.
