Hamburg's hopes of playing in the Champions League next season were dealt a major blow following a 1-0 home defeat to Duisburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Bosnian midfielder Ivica Grlic scored the winner nine minutes after restart to dent Hamburg's European hopes. Egyptian forward Zidan was handed a rare start due to the injury of Croatian frontman Ivica Olic. But he was substituted one minute from time, making way to Anton Putilo. It remains to be seen whether Hamburg coach Huub Stevens will stick with the 26-year-old in the upcoming matches. The defeat put Hamburg in fourth place of the league table with 47 points, one adrift of third-placed Schalke, who suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat to Werder Bremen. Hamburg must finish third in the Bundesliga if they are to advance to the Champions League qualifying phase. Bayern Munich can go ten points clear on top of the table if they beat Borussia Dortmund on Sunday.
