A total of 23 people were killed and 30 injured in a bus crash on Tuesday in Egypt's southern governorate of Minya, according to Egypt's Acting Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar.
Sixteen injured people were discharged from the Mallawi General Hospital, after receiving treatment.
The official spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, said that 28 equipped ambulances were sent to the site of the collision, and transferred the injured to the Mallawi General Hospital.
The injuries ranged from broken bones, suspected fractures to the spine, concussion, bleeding, cut wounds, bruises, and abrasions.
According to initial investigations, the crash took place in the early morning when a passenger bus hit a stopped trailer truck on a highway linking the capital of Cairo to the country's south. The bus was heading toward Cairo, coming from Sohag governorate. Authorities said the truck was changing tires on the roadside when the bus hit it in the city of Malawi.
Traffic accidents kill thousands every year in Egypt. According to official figures, 7,000 were killed and about 57,000 injured in road accidents in Egypt in 2020.
The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) said that the main causes of traffic accidents in Egypt include breach of safety standards and traffic instructions, lack of road maintenance, and reckless driving.
