UPDATE: Egypt's Mubarak transported back to prison from hospital Convicted ex-president is hauled back to Cairo's Tora Prison on orders of Egypt's prosecutor-general after health condition improves
Egypt's jailed ex-president Hosni Mubarak was transferred back to Cairo's Tora Prison Monday evening by order of Egypt's prosecutor-general. Escorted by a medical team, Mubarak arrived at Tora Prison at 6:30pm where he will be confined to the prison's hospital. Egyptian Prosecutor-General Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud on Monday afternoon had ordered the transfer of the deposed president from Cairo's Maadi Military Hospital to the nearby Tora Prison Hospital. The decision came following an improvement in Mubarak's health, as reported by a committee of doctors specifically formed earlier this month – on the order of the prosecutor-general – to assess the deposed president's health condition. Mubarak had been transferred to the Maadi Military Hospital in mid-June following reports that he had suffered heart failure, which had led to rumours of his death. According to Adel El-Saeed, spokesman for the prosecutor-general, the interior minister and Egypt's prison services had both been informed of Mahmoud's decision to transfer the 84-year-old Mubarak back to Tora Prison Hospital. Mubarak, along with his long-time interior minister Habib El-Adly, was sentenced to life in prisonlast month for the role he played in the death of unarmed protesters during last year's uprising.
