Arabic: على السلمى Born: March 12, 1936 Ali el-Selmy was appointed as Egypt's Deputy Prime Minister for Political and Development and Democratic Transition in July 2011 by Prime Minister Essam Sharaf. El-Selmy fell under criticism in October 2011 after proposing a document of supra-constitutional principles which many Egyptians saw as an attempt to supercede the writing of a new constitution. El-Selmy was born on March 12, 1936 in Alexandria. El-Selmy received a BA in business in 1956 and an MBA in 1964 from Alexandria University. He later earned a PhD from the University of Indiana in 1967. Considered one of Egypt's most experienced politicians, el-Selmy served in two ministries. He served as Minister of State for Administrative of Development from 1977 to 1978 and later as Minister of State for Monitoring and Follow-up from 1978 to 1979. He has also worked for Esso Petroleum Company, the National Bank of Egypt, the Central Bank in Alexandria, and the National Institute of Senior Management. He acted as an advisor at several institutions in Egypt and the greater Arab world. El-Selmy taught in the Faculty of Commerce at Cairo University from 1967-1974 and again from 1981-1986, and worked as an assistant professor at Kuwait University from 1974-1977. In 1986 he was appointed Vice President of Cairo University.
