CAIRO: The Egyptian High Judiciary Court today was evacuated of Judges in order to prevent possible clashes between judges and lawyers. More than 300 lawyers continued a demonstration outside the Court, protesting the new Law of the Judicial Authority as well as the outcome of a closed-door meeting amongst judges at the Judges Club. Some demonstrators denied the rumors that lawyers had stormed the Court, claiming that the demonstration is peaceful. The demonstration takes particular issue with Article 18 of the Judicial Authority Bill, which empowers judges to punish lawyers who violate the court system with imprisonment, regardless of extenuating circumstances or immunity. The lawyers mobbed the hall of the Court, read a statement condemning the new law and accused judges of nepotism. The lawyers also demanded the formation of a fact-finding committee to investigate the incident of Friday when judges fired into the air to break up the lawyers' protest. General-Secretary of the Judges' Club Mahmoud Helmy filed a lawsuit against a worker and a student over the gunfire incident outside the Court. Arabic here
