CAIRO: Over 250 lawyers organized a strike on Tuesday outside the Bar Association headquarters in downtown Cairo in protest against the new Judiciary Law and delaying the syndicate's elections. The demonstrators refused the issuing of any laws that could affect the immunity of lawyers. They insisted on delaying the law until a new parliament is elected. Other demonstrators called to prevent judges from entering the courts. The lawyers expressed their anger and changed against the head of the Judges Club. They accused him of coordinating with the judicial committee to delay the elections of the Bar Association. The demonstrating lawyers refused the calls to open the way. They accused lawyers affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood of coming only for electoral objectives. Brotherhood member and lawyer Mohamed Toson refused these claims. He said that Brotherhood lawyers are participating in the strike to protest against the law. He demanded the lawyers to unify themselves and stressed the need to take escalating steps gradually if demands are not met. Ali Kamal, another Brotherhood lawyer, expressed his support for the strike while stressing the necessity of avoiding any violent clashes to keep the strike peaceful. Mohamed al-Damaty, one of the candidates of the Bar Association elections, demanded the lawyers in different governorates organize strikes and protests to pressure the authorities to meet their demands. He threatened that if the demands are not met in three day, the lawyers should impede judicial work in Egypt.
