ALEXANDRIA, Egypt: The Alexandria Criminal Court sentenced the defendants in the Khaled Said murder case to seven years in prison Wednesday, after finishing court sessions after a special forensic report. Details of the court's sessions were not published, and journalists were banned from attending. Khaled Said was arrested in June 2010 in Alexandria and died in police custody. His family said he was tortured to death, but the defendants alleged that he suffocated after choking on a packet of drugs. An autopsy approved this as the cause of death, but pictures of Said's body circulated on Facebook showing a grotesque corpse, suggesting otherwise. The “We are all Khaled Said” Facebook page was used to organize protests in the 18-day uprising that led to the fall of former president Hosni Mubarak. Hundreds of political activists and members of Facebook page organized a protest outside the court. They chanted "We are all Khaled Said," and "Khalid, you are a martyr." The army and military police secured the court's buildings and the two policemen accused of his murder appeared against charges of unlawful arrest and using physical torture.
