Egyptian political activists, lawyers, members of human rights groups and those supporting detainees from the clashes at the Israeli and Saudi embassies and the Giza Security Directorate today demonstrated outside the Supreme State Security Prosecution compound in Tagammu Khames, where investigations into said incidents are underway. The demonstration was prompted by a decision by Public Prosecutor Hisham Badawi to renew the detention of 38 defendants from the Israeli embassy protests. The Supreme State Security investigation, which is being overseen by Badawi, reportedly revealed evidence of prior planning and deliberate incitement by activists and political leaders. Such leaders allegedly encouraged demonstrators to destroy the Israeli embassy barricade, storm the embassy and remove the Israeli flag once again. The investigation claims that “subversive and unknown elements” infiltrated the peaceful demonstrations in order to commit acts of sabotage. In addition, the investigation claims that a large contingent of protesting “ultras” from the Al-Ahly Football Club attacked State Security and attempted to storm the Ministry of the Interior after a match between the Kima Club of Aswan and Al-Ahly. The investigation also claims some demonstrators stopped the “ultras” from infiltrating the Ministry. Also allegedly revealed is a statement signed by 21 political movements claiming responsibility for the embassy siege, “to recover part of the state's prestige and dignity of the citizen.”
