Egyptian border forces from the western territory today thwarted an attempt by smugglers to sneak a large cache of arms into Egypt from Libya. The smugglers drove two suspicious SUVs from the Libyan side and were engaged by Egyptian troops, who managed to detain one of the vehicles and force the other to flee. The impounded vehicle was not registered and was carrying a missile launcher, four multi-machine guns, three sniper rifles and two machine guns. The cache also included a large amount of ammunition including 15,000 machine gun rounds, 54,560 multi-machine gun rounds and 15,550 sniper rifle rounds. The successful seizure of weapons was as a result of an ongoing security campaign combing the porous border between Egypt and Libya.
