SUEZ, Egypt: A total of 10 radiant shipments, containing dangerous insecticides, were stored in the port since 1999, according to workers in Adabieh Port in Suez. The former regime did not take any procedures to destroy or depart with this shipment. The port administration informed Egypt's ruling military council about the shipment in March 2011. The story started in 1999 when a businessman imported 15 containers of insecticides during the former Minister of Agriculture, Youssef Wali's, tenure. The shipment passed through France, Morocco, Port Said port and finally reached Adabieh Port in Suez. After examination, the shipment was found to be dangerously carcinogenic. The shipment, therefore, was stored. Five of the 15 containers were departed to Senegal port in 2000. The owner of the shipment and the importing company disappeared soon after. The free zone informed the general attorney they almost arrested the owner of the shipment. However the shipment owner presented an appeal and was released. The executive council, lead by the former governor of Suez, Seif Galal, succeeded to persuade the former Prime Minister, Ahmed Nazif, to issue a statement to bury the shipment in an Alexandrian landfill in 2010. However, the Egyptian Ministry of Environment Affairs refused to bury the shipment in the Alexandrian landfill because it may affect groundwater. Negotiations were held with French company La Farge to destroy the shipment in its ovens. La Farge also refused, saying burning them may result in carcinogenic gases. Adabieh Port workers plead Egypt's ruling military council to save them from these dangerous shipment that threaten their lives.
