Essam Salem, governor of Egypt's Mediterranean city of Alexandria, told Youm7 that he submitted his resignation to Egypt's ruling military council and to Prime Minister Essam Sharaf yesterday. “I have ended my short period in Alexandria,” he said. Salem said circumstances were inconvenient for administrative performance during his term as Alexandria's governor, particularly under the shadow of continued demonstrations and social demands that he could not meet at this time. Salem denied rumors that he quit because of demonstrations calling for his resignation. News of Salem's resignation was announced yesterday in Alexandria's Saad Zaghloul Square, where demonstrators are holding a sit-in. The demonstrators proposed three names to fill the now-vacant position: Mahmoud al-Khoudairy, former president of the Court of Cassation; political activist Abdelrahmah al-Goharey; and Ahmed Mekky, current president of the Court of Cassation.
