Ahmed Elmohamady's Sunderland suffered their first defeat of the season by losing 1-0 at home to bitter rivals Newcastle in the Tyne-Wear derby. The visitors were lifted by a well-taken freekick from full-back Ryan Taylor on 62 minutes, beating goalkeeper Simon Mignolet from a tight angle. Egypt's Elmohamady started once again for Steve Bruce's side, who now have one point from two games after holding Liverpool to a 1-1 draw last week. Ten minutes after the goal, Elmohamady was replaced by new signing Craig Gardner, only for right-back Phil Bardsley to get sent off near the end for a second bookable offence. Bruce could be forced to use Elmohamady in place of the suspended Bardsley when the Black Cats visit Brighton in the Carling Cup this week.
