Sevilla appointed Antonio Alvarez as coach until the end of the season, following the sacking of Manolo Jimenez. The Primera Liga club installed Alvarez, who used to be a technical staff member, on a temporary basis one day after former Spain coach Luis Aragones refused to take up the job. Jimenez was relieved of his duties due to Sevilla's unsatisfying results this season. Sevilla were held at home to a 1-1 draw with bottom team Xerez on Tuesday to extend their winless streak to seven games on all fronts. Jimenez was fired later on the same day. Now Sevilla are two points behind Real Mallorca, who lie fourth in the league table. Apart from the league poor results, a UEFA Champions League exit to CSKA Moscow last week rang alarm bells in Jimenez's mind. Sevilla will play their first game under the guidance of Alvarez against 10th-placed Villarreal on Sunday.
