In his first Premiership home game in charge of Chelsea, Guus Hiddink led The Blues to a 2-1 win over Wigan on Saturday. John Terry took a first-half lead for his team before Olivier kapo levelled for Wigan in the second. Frank Lampard saved the day for Guus Hiddink by scoring a late winner. Wigan had a very threatening start, and on 27 minutes Amr Zaki's touch released Paul Scharner through, but the Austrian shot was saved by Petr Cech. Three minutes late, Wigan were unlucky not to score when a Titus Bramble header was cleared off the line by Ashley Cole, the latter's clearance found Maynor Figueroa, whose shot was also cleared off the line by John Terry. However, Chelsea responded very well by taking the lead in the 24th minute. A scrappy corner was met by Terry on the edge of the box and the defender's brilliant volley found its way past Chris Kirkland after a slight deflection from Bramble. The home side could have added a second moments later through Lampard. The England midfielder hit a low shot but Kirkland did well to stand his ground and save. The second-half started from where the first ended as Chelsea looked keen on doubling their lead. Drogba had a brilliant chance to score as he chipped an effort past Kirkland but Bramble was there to clear before the ball reached the Wigan net. After withholding Chelsea's pressure, Wigan came back to the game with a number of half-chances. Zaki had his best moment of the game when he tried a curled effort from outside the box that went just wide of Cech's post. The Latics were rewarded for their efforts when Olivier Kapo successfully turned Charles N'Zogbia's low cross into the Chelsea net. However, Lampard saved Guus Hiddink's league home debut when he headed a lose ball past Kirkland on 90 minutes.
