Wigan knocked out by late Aliadiere strike
Published in FilGoal on 04 - 10 - 2008

Middlesbrough claimed a precious 1-0 win at Wigan, thanks to a last-gasp strike from substitute Jeremie Aliadiere.
The late drama at JJB came against run of play, with the home side dictating long spells of the game.
Amr Zaki teamed up with usual strike partner Emile Heskey upfront, whilst Mido allied with Afonso Alves on the opposing side.
Wigan dominated possession in the opening half-hour and a goal seemed to be on the cards for Zaki and Co.
Once again, Zaki looked lively as ever, but the Latics struggled to decode their domination into a genuine threat on goal.
Eight minutes from the break, Zaki was booked for a late challenge on compatriot Mohamed Shawky.
Two minutes later, former Boro midfielder Lee Cattermole was cautioned as well. Ironically, Shawky was on the receiving end once again.
The best chance of the half came three minutes from the interval when Zaki's long-range effort forced a fine save off the fingertips of Ross Turnbull.

Shawky looked in pain before leaving
Shawky's busy afternoon was eventually over four minutes into the second half, despite winning a series a decisive tackle prior to his exit.
The Egypt midfielder, who seemed to be struggling with an injury, was replaced by young Frenchman Didier Digard.
The second half wasn't better in terms of chances, as Boro looked to be well-organized at the back, with Mido operating more defensively on the left flank.
Turnbull was equal to attempts from Wilson Palacios (twice) and Jason Koumas, while Zaki remained quiet until he made way for Henri Camara in the 80th minute.
Late Drama
The in-form Turnbull thwarted Heskey's point-blank volley three minutes from the end, in what proved to be a match-winning save for Boro.
One minute from time, Stewart Downing headed in the ball for Aliadiere, who controlled it with his right foot before whipping in a left-footed drive for the winner.
Boro got away with the win to reach nine points, which saw them jumping from 16th to 10th place. Wigan slipped to 12th with eight points.
