Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermaine Defoe will link up with the England squad heading to Germany to cover Wayne Rooney should the Manchester United striker fail to recover in time for the World Cup. "Defoe goes with us to Germany because we have to be insured about Wayne Rooney," English media quoted coach Sven-Goran Eriksson as saying on Sunday. Rooney's participation in the World Cup is still in doubt as the 20-year-old is not confirmed whether his broken foot will or won't heal before England's first game against Paraguay on June 10th. Rooney will fly with the English team on Tuesday but he is set to return to Manchester Wednesday for a scan. Under FIFA rules, Eriksson can replace Rooney in the final squad till 24 hours ahead of their opening game. England play in Group B with Paraguay, Sweden and Trinidad and Tobago.
