Italy defender Gianluca Zambrotta sustained a muscular thigh injury during his side's warm-up game against amateur side San Gimignano, the Italian team said on Sunday. Zambrotta will undergo further medical tests to find out how bad the injury is and the Juventus left-back hopes it won't rule him out of Italy's first World Cup game against Ghana. "I hope it's nothing serious, it was a normal move, I just stretched a little too far and felt the muscle pull," Zambrotta was quoted as saying by sports magazine Football Italia. "It's certainly a muscular problem, but not due to tiredness or my fitness levels, quite simply, the muscle didn't hold up." Zambrotta has been struggling with injuries for most of the season and fears are mounting that the latest injury may bar him from playing in next month's World Cup. With his teammates having a day-off on Monday to participate in local elections, the 28-year-old opted to stay in the training camp for further treatment. "I want to participate in the World Cup and therefore look after my body, I don't feel like traveling too much at the moment," Zambrotta said. Italy will kick off their World Cup campaign against Ghana on June 12th, before meeting USA and the Czech Republic in their remaining matches in Group E.
