A total of 452 candidates will run in the mid-term elections of Egypt's Shura Council, or the upper house, the country's higher election commission said late Tuesday. The candidates will compete for 88 seats in the 264-member council. The poll will be held on June 1 with around 30 million voters. Egyptian Minister of Local Development Mohamed Abdel-Salam Mahgoub said late Tuesday that an operations office will be established to coordinate the procedures. Only 176 members of the council are directly elected for six- year terms, while the rest are appointed by the president. Elections and appointments are on a rotating basis, with one half of the council renewed every three years.
