CAIRO - Egyptians have spent LE1.9 billion on the annual Hajj pilgrimage in 2009, an economic report said Sunday. The report, issued by the Cabinet Information and Decision-Making Support Centre, said that liquidity crunch did not prevent the Egyptians from performing the Hajj, or Ummra (minor pilgrimage) at their fixed times in Saudi Arabia in 2009. An average Egyptian Haj, whether he went to Saudi Arabia through Government sanctioned or privately-run tour groups, spent between LE20,900 and LE30,800 while taking part in last year's pilgrimage, which is a central pillar of Islam. It is one the five pillars of Islam for followers of the religion. The others are the Shahadah (the profession of the faith), fasting during the holy month of Ramadan, praying five times a day and the Zakat (giving alms).
