US acknowledges Egypt's efforts to eliminate human trafficking
Published in Daily News Egypt on 08 - 07 - 2024

The US Government recently released the 2024 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report, in which it recognized Egypt's increased efforts to eradicate this international problem. Among the efforts recognized were: more than doubling prosecution of alleged sex and labour traffickers, and prosecuting allegedly complicit officials.
The government of Egypt also refurbished a new specialized trafficking shelter and expunged "prostitution-related" charges from the records of 51 sex trafficking victims.
In addition, the government established a pre-departure guidance unit to educate Egyptian workers traveling abroad about international labour standards and agreements, aiming at raising awareness about their rights and basic duties.
The TIP report positively assessed progress on combatting trafficking in persons and upgraded Egypt to the second highest out of four possible rankings – Tier 2.
The US Embassy in Cairo applauded Egypt's increased efforts to eliminate human trafficking and expressed its appreciation to the National Coordinating Committee for Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons and its chairperson, Naela Gabr, for collaboration and partnership.
Human trafficking is a shared challenge. In the United States, human trafficking cases have been reported in all 50 US states, the District of Columbia, and US territories. In the spirit of transparency and with a goal of strengthening efforts at home and in partnership with other countries, the TIP Report ranks US government efforts to address human trafficking, using the same standards as other countries.
