Whether you have read about it in a copy of Lonely Planet: Egypt or seen discussions about it on Cairo Scholars, markets like Khan El-Khalili and the Camel Market have long delighted foreigners and Egyptians alike. They offer a return to tradition, history, and for some, a fun memory that cannot be duplicated anywhere else. The newest addition to the list is somewhat more of a flea market rather than the souq that we are all accustomed to. The "flea market owes its name to the 17th century bustling European markets that sold flea-infested second hand clothing for pennies. Based in New Maadi and hosted by Open Days Egypt, the Maadi Open Day is a five-day market featuring a wide selection of brand new, tag-still-attached clothing by designers that we know and love. It's organized, clean, and absent of fleas. Running from July 13 to July 18, this altered flea market features clothing, shoes, accessories, furniture and a wide variety of other desirable items. This week, Maadi Open Day for Him, Her & Kids, is just one of a string of open days that have been held since the beginning of the year. Each time around, this Cairene flea market features a particular theme of products, such as Asian-inspired furniture from Malaysia and Indonesia, or handbags and jewelry imported from Syria and Lebanon, as well as clothing and accessories for veiled women.
