Lebanese troops were Friday deployed en mass on the border with Syria over reports that arms were being smuggled into the Syrian province of Homs, a Lebanese Army source told German press agency dpa. “This measure is aimed at protecting the Lebanese borders,” said the source who requested anonymity. A resident in the Lebanese border area of Knessieh told dpa that the soldiers had started deploying early Friday and had set up checkpoints. It comes as reports that Syrian troops were also massing close to the Lebanese border, or possibly inside Lebanon's territory. Activists in Syria say Damascus is continuing its violent attacks on citizens in the country, which has left more than 6,000 people dead, including 400 children, since protests began last March to oust President Bashar al-Assad. In the past week, the international community has increased pressure on Damascus as near constant shelling of the central city of Homs continues. Activists say hundreds of people have been killed in what they are describing as a massacre.
