NORFOLK, Virginia: E!News reported that their cameras recorded an elephant being brought into Nicole Ritchie's wedding day celebrations by her father, Lionel. According to the father, it was intended as a surprise for his daughter. Ritchie, the former Simple Life star, showed her support last July in a tweet for a campaign by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to stop Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus from abusing its elephants. PETA is giving the Ritchie's some benefit of the doubt, but still has written privately to the star in order to respectfully ask her to keep exotic animals off the guest list for any further celebrations. “We're sure she didn't know that Have Trunk Will Travel – the company that likely provided Tai the elephant, who was taken from the wild as a baby more than 40-years-ago – trains its elephants with bullhooks and electric shock prods.” PETA was not alone in its calls for better judgment on the Ritchie's part. “If, as news reports state, Nicole Ritchie indeed really likes elephants, then the last thing that she should do is force one of these majestic and sentient animals to perform for her amusement,” E! quoted UK-based Director of The Captive Animals' Protection Society Liz Tyson as saying. Animals for human entertainment is never okay. BM
