The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Beijing entered its final day on Thursday. The participants discussed a broad spectrum of political and economic issues, focusing on the situation in Syria, Iran's nuclear program, the Afghan conflict and measures to counter terrorism and drug trafficking. The discussions resulted in 10 signed documents. Russia's President Vladimir Putin, who is heading his country's delegation, is also to hold bilateral talks with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai on the sidelines of the summit. During the summit, the sides decided to promote the former Governor of Russia's Irkutsk Region Sergey Mezentsev to Secretary General of the SCO. China has now passed the SCO presidency to Kyrgyzstan. The next SCO meeting is to take place in 2013 in Bishkek.
