The National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) received more than 13,000 complaints in the last 11 months till the end of last November, NCHR member Mohamed Fayek said. NCHR has established a regional network for receiving complaints from Arab countries within the framework of national institutions or non-governmental organizations of countries that have no national councils for human rights.
Offices set for receiving complaints play an important role in developing the national institutions, as they reflect conditions of people in the street, he said, adding that the European Commission and the United Nations Office in Geneva lauded the NCHR complaints offices. They advised a number of Arab countries which intend to establish offices for receiving complaints to draw upon the NCHR experience.
Fayek Attributed the growing number of complaints to the spread of the NCHR mobile units nationwide in accordance with a plan of action coordinated between those units' professionals and researchers and government departments in all provinces.
For its part, the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights criticized NCHR for not being serious in dealing with the issues relating to the Egyptian people, such as citizenship and the right to housing.
