Islamic State defectors told the New York Times that lashings for makeup under veils and having too tight abayas were carried out as punishments. The Islamic State is now flogging women for wearing makeup under their niqabs as well as for having excessively form-fitting abayas. The abaya is the long black robe which women in Islamic State territory are forced to wear. The niqab is the face veil which goes with it. An Islamic-State defector now in Turkey told the New York Times how, as a member of the Islamic State's all female Al-Khansaa brigade she watched her childhood friends receive 30 lashes. There were "20 lashes for the abaya offense, five for the makeup, and another five for not being meek enough when detained." ISIS has also released a new series of pictures showing the group throwing alleged gay people from roofs.
