By Mme Sosostris Rubber ducks may make bath time fun, but that is not how the British Council in Cairo is using them. A flock of 2000 yellow rubber ducks raced down the River Nile last Friday to make splash with the launching of the free English language learning website www.go4english.com,www.go4english.com,as singer Khaled Selim, guest of honour, waved his hands. By completing the entry quiz on the website, nearly 4,500 people adopted ducks free of charge and had the chance to win digital cameras and free English language courses at the British Council. In an attempt to raise money for the Children's Cancer Hospital 57357, 3,000 duck-shaped cookies were sold for three pounds each during the event. In this world rife with misunderstanding, intercultural dialogue is an absolute necessity. Italy is doing much to promote that with a series of EuroMediterranean events. It included the participation of Italy's Taranta Power, Egypt's Fathy Salama, Algeria's Hasna El-Becharia, and Jordan's Tala Tutunji. Last week Cairo got a dose of that good thinking when the leaders of Egypt's Cultural Palaces held an open dialogue hosted by head of the palaces Mustafa Elwy. The event involved the discussion of the importance of cultural training workshops and dialogues to better the nation as a centre of cultural expertise in the region.
