High-level surprise

With a total 24 medals, the Egyptians were crowned champions in all weight categories in the Biathle/Triathle World Championships.
Egyptian athletes claimed ten gold, eight silver and six bronze medals in the five-day event that took place from 7 to 12 October.
Though to be sure, Egypt only took part in the youth events, which it won, not the masters, which gave the host nation Guatemala overall success by taking part in both the youth and masters events.
“This is such an impressive victory, the first ever for Egyptians to dominate the whole event and in all age categories,” said Sherif Al-Erian, president of the Modern Pentathlon Federation. “Egypt was first in the Triathle ahead of giant nations like Russia, Great Britain and South Africa.”
Al-Erian added that the achievement was proof that the Modern Pentathlon in Egypt “is going in the right direction and is meeting a successful long-term plan to advance the sport”.
Head of the Egyptian delegation Mamdouh Al-Shestawi was happy with the achievement as he watched in Guatemala. “I am so proud of the athletes, all of them, even those who didn't win any medals. I also thank the parents and appreciate their efforts in travelling with their children and supporting them,” Al-Shestawi said.
More than 200 participants from across the globe amazed spectators with their stamina, determination and passion over the five days as they pushed themselves to the limit in the Biathle / Triathle World Championships held at the Naval Academy of Puerto San Jose, Guatemala, from 8-10 October.
According to the International Modern Pentathlon Federation (UIPM), the participating athletes were as young as 11 years of age in the Youth E categories, up to those in the Masters D category where competitors were over 70 years old.
The tournament was even more special for the UIPM as it was the first time the World Championships have been all inclusive with events for athletes with both mental disability and visual impairment.
According to participants, the Puerto San Jose Naval Academy was the perfect venue for the championships, which was also blessed with beautiful weather and conditions that were greatly appreciated by all who were involved, from athletes to officials to spectators.
