Demonstrations surround Alexandria courthouse during activist Hassan Mostafa's trial
Published in Ahram Online on 06 - 07 - 2013

Activists demand Mostafa's release arguing the charges he assaulted a prosecutor have been fabricated and state a case that all activists should be freed since ouster of Brotherhood regime
Hundreds of activists demonstrate on Saturday in front of the Alexandria Criminal Court in anticipation of the trial of activist Hassan Mostafa.
Mostafa, who is currently spending a one-year prison sentence in Egypt's second-largest city on other charges, was referred to criminal court for inciting activists to block Egypt's railway and help suspects evade arrest.
"Political activists should be released after the success of the 30 June revolution and the end of the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood, who fabricated charges against political activists," political activist Mohamed Nabil told the Al-Ahram Arabic news site.
Mostafa was initially arrested on 21 January after attempting to file a complaint with the Alexandrian prosecutor-general about the lack of lawyers for dozens of detainees arrested on 20 January during a protest.
He was charged with physically attacking and verbally abusing prosecutor Ahmed Darwish while attempting to file his complaint - a charge Mostafa claimed to be fabricated.
Mostafa was given a two-year prison term, which was later reduced to one year in prison on appeal.
The court and surrounding streets are held under strict security presence, since Alexandria saw clashes on Friday between ousted president Mohamed Morsi supporters - who want him reinstated - and his opponents. Only the family of Mostafa, his friends, media and attorneys were allowed into the court.
