Egypt's administrative prosecution has ordered an urgent investigation into Sunday's blaze at the construction site of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), prosecution spokesman Mohamed Samir said on Monday. The flames engulfed scaffolding used by construction workers at the rear of the GEM, which is still being built. "Full technical reports on the causes of the fire will be handed to officials as soon as the investigations are completed," the statement read. Samir highlighted that the probe will begin immediately, aiming to hold officials accountable for the incident, as well as determining the scale of any losses. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, with no casualties reported, and no damage to antiquities or museum facilities, according to the Ministry of Antiquities. Video footage of flames and plumes of thick black smoke rising over the museum entrance were circulating on social media minutes after the fire broke out. The museum, which is located near Egypt's famous Giza Pyramids, will house some of the nation's most unique and precious artifacts. A partial opening of the GEM is planned for later in the year.
