13 Zamalek fans arrested over riots after Cairo derby Police forces successfully secured the first post-revolution Ahly-Zamalek match despite clashes in and outside Cairo stadium
The local police and the military police forces arrested 13 Zamalek supporters following the 2-2 Cairo derby draw between Ahly and Zamalek in week-27 of the Egyptian premier League on Wednesday. Some of Zamalek hardcore fans set the stand of Cairo stadium on fire but the security contained the situation before the Whites Knights clashed with rivals outside the stadium raining Ahly's bus with stones. Some supporters of the two Cairo-based sides displayed profane language on signs as Zamalek fans abused Ahly's striker, Emad Meteb and his wife, the former Miss Egypt, Yara Naoum while Ahly supporters fought back with cartoon charts mocking Zamalek coaching twins, manager Hossam Hassan and football director Ibrahim. The league decider match was held amid security concerns and barely avoided a delay after violent clashes Tahrir Square between police forces and protesters supporting martyrs' families. Both sides' coaching staffs and players had their fair shares of conflict too as chaos dominated the pitch for about five minutes after Mauritanian forward Dominique Da Silva scored the draw goal for Ahly in the 84thminute, seven minutes from time. The turmoil erupted on the ground after Hossam Hassan became angry, accusing the Red Devils' Portuguese tactician Manuel Jose of ‘unfair play' as Da Silva found his way to the net as two White players fell to the ground due to injuries. The clashes continued between the athletes after the final whistle as Zamalek players made their way to Ahly's rooms where much yelling and arguing commenced. “I thank the head of the Supreme Council of Armed Forces and the ministry of interior for securing the match,” says president of the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), Samir Zaher. Zamalek hopes for their first league-title since 2004 fade as they are stuck at point 51 with five points still separating them from seventh successive title-holders, Ahly, with only three rounds of the season's finale remaining.
