Sunday 12 October Screening of Cairo Drive at Netherlands-Flemish Institute at 7pm Cairo Drive, an Egyptian-American documentary, captures the mayhem of the Egyptian capital's streets. Directed by Sherif El-Katsha, the 2013 production received the Best Arab Documentary prize at Abu Dhabi Film Festival in the same year. For a total of 77 minutes, the Egyptian-American director rides with the city's various motorists: taxi drivers, ambulance drivers, traffic police and ordinary citizens, all of whom show the unwritten rules of navigating Cairo's streets. Mahmoud Azmy Street, Zamalek, Cairo Roznama III exhibition opening at Medrar for Contemporary Art at 8pm Roznama III is a periodical competition and art exhibition for contemporary visual art centered around young Egyptian artists.Running from Sunday 12 October till 30 October in Medrar for Contemporary Art, Roznama's objective is not only to showcase the works of young artists on Egypt's scene but to provide a space for experimentation, research, mixed-media and multimedia production.Roznama utilises many artforms, not only newage mediums such as video and coding, but also painting sculpture and photography.The exhibition also presents a competition between the participating artists,the first prize winner will be awarded a cash prize of $1000.Awards will be announced at the opening. 7 Gamal El-Din Abu El-Mahasen, Garden City, Cairo The Backstage Musical at Mahmoud Mokhtar Center at 8pm Teatro Independent Theatre group will once again perform "The Backstage Musical", this time at the Mahmoud Mokhtar Center. The crew includes Maysa Orensa and Amira Reda accompanied by George Kolta on the piano and Mirna Aziz on the flute. The show's scenographer and director is Omar El-Moutaz Bel'lah, founder of Teatro. 5 Tahrir St., next to El-Qahera Club, opposite the Cairo Opera House Lutoslawski Retuned at Bibliotheca Alexandrina at 8pm A trio from Poland featuring clarinetist Szymon Klima, pianist Piotr Wyleżoł and the double bass player Adam Kowalewski, will present the Lutosławski-Retuned project, or Lutosławski jazzed-up, a project which aims at bringing the compositions of the renowned Polish composer and conductor Witold Lutosławski (1913-1994), to the audiences worldwide. The trio fuses the classical music and jazz bringing unique sound in their innovative approach to the composer. Read morehere. Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Chatby, Alexandria ## Monday 13 October Puppetry and marching troupes parade at Bahr Soghayar Kornish at 3pm As the final stop on Mahatat for Contemporary Art's tour entitled 'Art of Transit' El-Kousha puppet troupe and Abo Karim Marching band will perform in a street parade on the island of Manial. Abo Karim marching band (a sub-project of the Oscarisma troupe) features nine musicians and percussionists playing instruments specially designed for public space performance. El-Kousha puppet theatre troupe are known for performing with giant puppets in public spaces. Read more on Mahata's tourhere. Bahr Shoghayar Kornish, Cinema Faten Hamama Side, Rhoda Island, Cairo Golden hits jazzed-up, at El-Gomhoreya Theatre at 8pm A quartet from Poland featuring Clarinetist Szymon Klima, pianist Piotr Wyleżoł, double bass player Adam Kowalewski and percussionist Sebastian Frankiewicz, will perform many captivating jazzed-up renditions of the well-known golden hits from the Polish 1960s. In addition, the quartet will perform a few hits from Lutosławski's "functional music," as he called it, for film, radio and theatre, under the pseudonym Derwid. The songs from this time had lyrics from Polish poetry and were performed by well-known Polish singers. Read morehere. 12 El-Gomhoreya Street, Abdeen, Cairo Argentinean ballet troupe at the Cairo Opera House at 8pm Argentinean troupe Ballet Concierto, with world-renowned Iñaki Urlezaga, will perform at the Cairo Opera House between 13 and 16 October. Ballet Concierto was founded by Iñaki Urlezaga, with the artistic director Lilian Govine, and Eliana Figueroa and Urlezaga as principal dancers. Read morehere. The soloists of the evening will be stars of the Cairo Opera Company. The concert is conducted by Tarek Mahran and directed by Abdalla Saad. Read morehere. Curated by Leipzig-based Constanze Wicke, the exhibition is the result of workshops in Algiers, Casablanca, Tunis, Beirut, Ramallah, Amman, Khartoum, Erbil, Dubai, Alexandria and Cairo, organised by four branches of the Goethe Institute along with local partners. This is the first of three nights celebrating 40 comedians. The exhibition will run until 27 October. 6 Victor Bassili Street, Al Pharaana, Al Azarita, Alexandria Serbian songs at the Cairo Opera House at 8pm Soprano Katarina Jovanovic and pianist Milena Petrovic will perform several songs from Serbia. Read more here Cairo Opera House, main hall, Zamalek, Cairo Maktoob Trio at Makan Center at 9pm The band's line-up consists of percussionist Ayman Mabrouk, accordionist Wael El-Sayed, Ahmed Maher on oud and French/Lebanese Andre Segone on double bass. All four musicians have appeared at numerous festivals, both in Egypt and internationally. They premiered together at El Genaina Theatre in 2013. They also performed with Tunisian artist Ghalia Ben Ali at the Hayy music festival last year, receiving strong applause from the audience. 1 Saad Zaghloul Street, opposite the Saad Zaghloul Mausoleum, Downtown Cairo ## Friday 17 October Screening of short films at Wekalet Behna at 5pm Six short films by young Alexandrian filmmakers will be shown at Wekalet Behna: 17 Fouad Street by Ahmed Nabil, Mawal El-Kahk by Belal Hosny, January Shify and The Grocer's Daughter by Emad Mabrouk, along with The Elevator and Gamal and Amany by Hadeel Nazmy. Wekalet Behna in Alexandria will host weekly screenings for one month of independent films which feature director's talks. At the end of the month, the art space will host a roundtable discussion on the issues faced by Alexandrian independent cinema and how to tackle them. The two week festival is set to kick off on Friday at Azhar Park and will feature an opening ceremony and performances by Gandini Juggling (UK), Bover (Spain), Lumen (Switzerland), The Three Heroes of Jutland (Denmark) andAl-Darb Al-Ahmar Arts School(Egypt). Cairo Opera House, small hall, Zamalek, Cairo Sunday 19 October Screening of Green Mirages at Netherlands-Flemish Institute at 7pm Green Mirages, the second documentary by Nadia Kamel – whose first documentary Salata Baladi proved a hit – takes place in the oasis of Gabes where Habib Ayeb, an academic geographer and ecologist was born in Tunisia. The film explores urban development and how it affects communities. Mahmoud Azmy Street, Zamalek, Cairo Screening of Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush at Bibliotheca Alexandria at 7pm In celebration of American filmmaker Charlie Chaplin's would-be 125th birthday, Bibliotheca Alexandrina is holding a week long retrospective of the cinema pioneer's work. The week will kick off with 1925 production The Gold Rush, a silent Oscar winning film written, directed and starring Chaplin himself as the Little Tramp. The rest of the week will feature daily screenings of Modern Times, Limelight and The Great Dictator. Auditorium Hall, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria Ramzi Yassa and BA Chamber Orchestra in Bibliotheca Alexandrina at 8pm Egyptian world-renowned pianist Ramzi Yassa will perform Haydn's piano concerto no. 11 on D Major. He will be accompanied by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Chamber Orchestra conducted by Hisham Gabr. The evening will also perform C.P.E. Bach Symphony in A major Op. 665 and in the second half of the evening W.A. Mozart's Symphony no 40 in G minor.
