CAIRO: Sources inside Israel said Sunday that the new Israeli ambassador to Egypt is due to arrive in Cairo on Monday after his predecessor fled the country when violence erupted outside the embassy in Giza in September. The new ambassador, Yaakov Amitai, is replacing Yitzhak Levanon and will be working from home until a “secure spot” is located for the embassy. Israel said previously that its embassy would not be functioning again until “proper” security measure are in place. The Israeli embassy was stormed in late September after protests over the killing of Egyptian guards by Israeli troops, who were allegedly pursuing terrorists. The Egyptian army guarding the embassy clashed with protesters in what turned into an all night fight between the two sides. Dozens were arrested and accused of attempting to break into the embassy and the Giza security department building. Many of the activists were turned over for military trial. The protesters were demanding justice for the dead after the Jewish state refused to issue an official apology and merely expressed its sorrow over the killings. Hareetz newspaper reported that the former ambassador Levanon returned to Egypt in November for a short visit to bid farewell before his leave. Amitai had previously served at the embassy in Cairo and is fluent in Arabic. BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/51yWQ Tags: Ambassador, Arrival, Israel Section: Egypt, Latest News, Palestine
