CAIRO: The political group inside the Egyptian cabinet, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Ali al-Selmy, is reviewing proposed amendments to a draft of constitutional principles. Selmy expressed preliminary approval of the amendments when meeting with the committee, according to Waheed Abdel Majid, head of the committee formed by a group of political powers that rejected articles No. 9 and 10 of the document. Majid told Youm7 that the committee told Selmi to add the word "guiding" to the document to show that it is not obligatory, and also to amend the articles regarding the formation of the constituent assembly that will write Egypt's new constitution. Majid said the document provided that two-thirds of the parliament must approve the constituent assembly, which could be very difficult and could mean the constitution would not be written in 2012. Therefore, the committee suggested amending the necessary percentage to a simply majority of one half.
