CAIRO: Egyptian presidential candidate Amr Moussa has called for solving this week's deadly Maspiro clashes by passing the Unified Worship Places Law. The Unified Worship Places Law would allow Christians to build churches in Egypt under the same laws governing the building of mosques. Moussa said passing such a law would prevent another Maspero incident from happening in Egypt. On Sunday, at least 26 people were killed when clashes erupted between demonstrations and military police forces outside Maspiro, , the headquarters of the Egyptian Radio and Television. Moussa, formerly Secretary General of the Arab League, also claimed that Egyptians must solve these internal struggles to protect national and internal security. During a meeting with his presidential campaign managers in his office in Dokki, Moussa said that blame should not be placed on foreign elements or thugs. He also expressed reservations on isolating those members of the formerly ruling, now-dissolved National Democratic Party who were not involved in political corruption under the former regime. Moussa questioned the authority of a body that decided that 2 million NDP party members would be isolated from the upcoming political elections. Addressing the issue of the military council's control of the Egyptian government, Moussa said he was sure the military council would hand over power to a civilian authority in no more than one year. He said the council does not want to prevent the democratic process and is concerned about economic recovery for Egypt. He also said if he won the upcoming presidential election he would not run for a second term.
