CAIRO: The Egyptian people could start a new revolution if the country's ruling military council refuses to hand over power to a civilian authority in February, said presidential candidate Mohamed Selim al-Awa. During a tour of Cairo's iconic Tahrir Square, epicenter of the country's January uprising, al-Awa said he decided to participate in today's demonstrations as a refusal of recent steps taken by the military council. Al-Awa said that he is an Islamic thinker and denied any affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood, long considered Egypt's largest opposition group. Commenting on a banner raised by a Coptic Christian demonstration, he added, "The rights of Copts are respected as [they are] a part of the Egyptian people."
