SUEZ, Egypt – Workers at the Suez Canal in cooperation with their rescue staff counterparts at the Suez Canal Authority today lifted the Egyptian Floating Dock 58 days after it sank into the Canal. The final lifting operation began early Saturday after officials checked the safety control chamber and the generators by using cranes, a source from the Suez Shipyard Company said. Around 220 meters of the 310 meters of the dock is now lifted, he added. Once the dock is fully lifted, a committee will be convened to check the dock, he said. The company will then hold an emergency meeting to determine whether the dock will be fixed in the port or in the Dubai port. If the back or side of the dock is damaged, it must be fixed abroad, in Dubai, which is the closest and second largest port, said Wael Qandour, a member of the Suez Canal Authority's Board of Directors. There must be a quick decision about total losses after the dock is lifted, he added. The floating dock represents 85 percent of the revenues, equal to 110 million EGP (U.S. $18.4 million) last year, he said. The dock, the third largest in the world, was destroyed on July 26. Its total lifting capacity is 55,000 tons. The dock was suffering from certain problems over the last year, including administrative violations, according to the Central Body for Auditing.
