MATROUH, Egypt: Egypt's National Security Agency (NSA) began its duties in Matrouh governorate with the same staff of the dissolved State Security Investigations (SSI). The former SSI headquarter in Matrouh is being restored after it was burned by demonstrators during Egypt's January 25 Revolution. The NSA began working two days ago in Matrouh police station until the restoration of its headquarters is finished, an anonymous source said. The SSI was dissolved last month in response to the demands of Egyptians, who have long viewed it as an agent of torture, murder, and unannounced detentions. The NSA was created to replace the dissolved SSI, but fears remain that it will be the same institution practicing the same human and civil rights violations under a different name.
