Portsmouth, who were relegated to the English second division after going into administration, will not be able to play in next season's Europa League after missing the deadline to submit their application. The FA and Premier League said in a joint statement on Thursday that they had told the club's administrators they would "not consider any late application for granting of a UEFA Club Licence for the 2010-11 season". Portsmouth, who are in $183 million debt, were hoping to play in the Europa League despite their financial woes. They would have been eligible to feature in Europe's secondary competition if they had acquired the UEFA license in time, having reached the FA Cup final against Chelsea, who will play in the Champions League. However, Portsmouth could not apply for the license before the March 1 deadline.
