A Luca Toni goal gave AS Roma 2-1 victory over Serie A leaders Inter Milan on Saturday to blow the title race wide open. Roma, who made an astonishing progress under coach Claudio Ranieri after struggling at the wrong end of the table for many weeks, took the lead after 17 minutes. Inter keeper Julio Cesar spilled a Nicolas Burdisso header and Daniele De Rossi pounced to tap in into an empty net. Argentinean striker Diego Milito leveled the score six minutes past the hour mark when he converted a Wesley Sneijder cross from close range. Towering frontman Toni restored Roma's advantage 18 minutes from time when he collected a mis-hit shot from Rodrigo Taddei before firing home from inside the area. Inter were unlucky not to secure a share of spoils in stoppage time when Milito rattled the post with a powerful shot. The Nerazzurri remain on top of the league table with 63 points, just one ahead of second-placed Roma. AC Milan can go level on points with Roma if they beat Lazio on Sunday.
