Two wonderful strikes from Alessandro Del Piero handed Juventus an important 2-0 win over Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday. The Italian international stunned the hosts with his first goal on 17 minutes, before hitting again in the 67th minute to seal a valuable away win for the Old Lady. After losing 2-1 to Juve in the competition's last round in Turin, Real were keen on retaining Group H summit with a home win against their Italian rivals. However, Los Merengues looked far from impressive until Del Piero punished them by capitalizing on Guti's miss-pass in the centre of the pitch. The 33-year-old was allowed to run unchallenged from the Real defense before he placed a perfect left-footed effort past Iker Casillas. Apart from one real chance where Mahamadou Diarra horribly headed Roysthon Drenthe's cross wide, Juve's defense were more than capable of halting any Real threat until the end of the first half. The hosts got slightly better after the interval but still failed to produce any real chances. However, it was Del Piero, who once again dented Real's hopes of winning the game with a brilliant trademark free kick from just outside the box.
Similar to his strike against AS Roma in the league on Sunday, the skipper chipped his effort above Real's wall, leaving Casillas with absolutely no chance. Real coach Bernd Schuster tried to revive his team by bringing on Javier Saviola and Rafael Van Der Vaart but it was all too little too late for the German coach. The win enforces Juve as top of the group with ten points, four ahead of second place Real Madrid. In the group's other game, BATE Borisov of Belarus were beaten at home by FC Zenit St. Petersburg 2-0. Pavel Progebnyak put the visitors ahead on 34 minutes before Portuguese striker Danny put the result beyond doubt for the Russian champions. Dick Advocaat's team kept their hopes of qualification to the second round alive, as the win put them in third place with four points. BATE lie bottom of the group with just two.
