David Villa's double helped Valencia defeat newly-promoted Malaga 2-0 and return to the top of the Primera Liga. The Spain striker, who was the top scorer at EURO 2008, headed home in the 71st to open the scoring. He ensured Valencia's victory in stoppage time, one minute after Malaga's Salva Ballesta was sent off. Valencia, who have 10 points from four games, lead the standings. Villarreal, who continued their fine results by beating Racing Santander 2-0, have the same amount of points but lie second due to their inferior goal difference to Valencia.
