Everton failed to confirm a place in next season's UEFA Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at Emirates in the Premiership on Sunday. Nicklas Bendtner headed the winner in the 77th minute as Arsenal overcame a stubborn Everton side. The Toffees needed a draw to guarantee their UEFA Cup berth after Aston Villa were defeated 2-0 by Wigan Athletic on Saturday. Everton are fifth in the Premiership table with 62 points, three ahead of fifth-placed Villa. "There is a lot of disappointment not to get the point but the performance was good, the players stuck at it," Everton coach David Moyes told the club's website. "It is always difficult here because Arsenal have so much possession. We have been fourth or fifth all year and we want to hang on to it." Elsewhere, Liverpool defeated Manchester City 1-0 in their final game at Anfield Road this season. Spanish striker Fernando Torres scored his 32nd goal of the season in all competitions to help the Reds defeat Claudio Ranieri's men.
