Newcastle Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins said on Wednesday he escaped death after being subjected to gunfire while driving in his home city Lagos. The 22-year-old Nigerian explained the terrifying experience, insisting that the assault was intended to take his life. "They shot indiscriminately and tried to kill all the occupants of the car. They weren't there to rob me but to finish me off," Martins told the Sun. The report stated that the attack on Martins' Mercedes resulted in the injury of one of his friends, as the former Inter Milan forward was fortunate to escape unharmed. "I thought I was going to die. They executed it like professional hired assassins. It was hell. "I was dead in my heart and soul. It all happened like something in the movies." It was also mentioned that the incident occurred near a petrol station in Lagos, where Martins grew up and still owns an apartment. Martins, who has 17 caps and 11 goals for the Super Eagles, has hinted that a return to his home city is almost impossible after the incident. "I don't feel safe in Lagos any more," he said. "When the situation gets out of control I don't think coming home is something I can even contemplate."
