Ahmed Fathi's Sheffield United were relegated from the Premiership following a 2-1 defeat to Wigan while West Ham stunned champions Manchester United 1-0 to preserve their top-flight status. At Bramall Lane, Paul Scharner gave Wigan the lead in the 14th minute but former Sunderland striker John Stead grabbed the equalizer seven minutes before halftime. Defender David Unsworth notched home from the penalty spot in the 51st minute to help Wigan secure their place in the Premiership next season and send the Blades down. Egyptian winger Fathi, who made just three appearances with Sheffield, wasn't included in the match's squad. It remains to be seen whether he will continue with Sheffield in the second division or return back to Egypt next season. Argentinean international striker Carlos Tevez scored two minutes after re-start to lead West Ham to a 1-0 away win over recently-crowned Premiership champions United.

Robbie Keane opened the scoring after ten minutes before Bulgarian in-form striker Dimitar Berbatov doubled the lead in the 32nd minute. Belgian striker Emile Mpenza pulled one back for the visitors five minutes before the interval. Everton also secured a place in the UEFA Cup after holding FA Cup finalists Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.
